Another day, another colossal systemic disappointment, courtesy of the Supreme Court.
As reported by the Associated Press today (June 24), the SCOTUS has voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that guaranteed abortion rights on a federal level. That’s right: States now have the ability to ban abortions. Millions of women could be left without viable options to safely terminate their pregnancies.
In the final opinion, Justice Samuel Alito explained that the Constitution doesn’t explicitly reference rights to abortion: “Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives,” he wrote. There’s a hell of a lot more things that weren’t explicitly defined or outlawed in a document signed by some White dudes nearly 250 years ago, but okay.
This isn’t about religion. This isn’t about politics. This isn’t about actually being "pro-life." This is simply yet another tactical attack on Americans by its own country.
For decades, Roe v. Wade seemed untouchable, even as anti-abortion activists fought to lessen abortion accessibility across the country. With today's ruling, though, the United States joins the illustrious ranks of Iran, North Korea, and Russia, who have also rolled back reproductive rights within the past three decades, according to Foreign Policy.
There’s no getting around it: This isn’t about religion. This isn’t about politics. This isn’t about actually being "pro-life." This is simply yet another tactical attack on Americans by its own country. Another power play by conservatives designed to oppress and endanger women. Another legal ruling that seems determined to bring The Handmaid’s Tale to life. Under his eye.
All I want to say is that they don't really care about us, word to MJ.
“It’s a sad day for the court and for the country,” Biden said after today’s ruling, emphasizing the need for people to vote about this matter during the elections this fall. “This decision must not be the final word.”
While we might have to wait a while before change happens via the so-called justice system, there are steps you can take to help now. Organizations like Planned Parenthood will be even more important. Aside from that particular national institution, there are plenty of abortion funds and other resources to which you can donate.
See below for a list of national abortion funds you can donate to now, including state directories.
