I’m a politics junkie, but I have never cared much for political speeches. Because I follow politics closely, I don’t typically learn much as politicians regurgitate material or make jokes using punch lines that have been practiced and audience-tested. To this point, I only watched highlights of the speeches given at the 2024 RNC and 2024 DNC. However, I made an exception for Michelle Obama’s Night 2 speech at the DNC. Michelle isn’t just a politician, or more accurately, a politician’s wife. Michelle is a force unto herself, previously restrained by her former role of First Lady. This night we saw Michelle unleashed, and it was a sight to see.
A few years ago, I was discussing with a person who would appear as themselves in my fiction novel Strong Beginnings. The setting was a gala, and I asked what she might wear to such an event and what color. She said she’d likely wear a red dress and asked for another thing.
“Can you give me Michelle Obama’s arms," she asked.
Michelle looked like she’d been training for a role in The Woman King. She was ready for battle and took no prisoners. She didn’t go low, but you could tell if she ever did; it would be a sight to see. If you didn’t get a chance to see Michelle’s speech, I encourage you to watch it in its entirety. It’s just over 20 minutes long, and you’ll be glad you did.
